Keys May Get Some Rate Relief

The state Senate approved a bill amendment that would exclude Monroe County from legislation that would substantially raise windstorm insurance rates in coastal areas across the state.

The Senate voted 28 to 10 in favor of the amendment.

The Senate also passed amendments that would add a “licensed professional structural engineer” and an “insurance consumer advocate” to the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology. This amendment came at the request of Florida Keys State Rep. Holly Raschein.

David Simmons (R-Altamonte Springs) filed the amendments to SB 1770 on Wednesday and the Senate approved them Thursday. The entire bill could be voted on as early as Tuesday.

The bill deals with rates handed down by Citizens Property Insurance Corp., the state’s insurer of last resort.
