Key West Citizen: Gentility marks state house representative race

If mud-slinging and dogmatic diatribes are your cup of tea, then the campaigns of the two candidates seeking to represent the Keys and south Miami-Dade in the Florida House of Representatives won’t hold much interest.

While Republican Holly Merrill-Raschein and Democrat Ian Whitney are clear on the points that separate them as their campaigns for the District 120 seat gear up into full swing, the candidates have also made clear their mutual respect for each other.

Both candidates point to their party affiliations as plusses for voters. The House, like the Senate, is a Republican-dominated body, which gives Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, enough of a majority to virtually eliminate the possibility of veto override.

Being a member of the majority party, says Raschein, gives her the ability to bring attention to matters of local importance.

Raschein maintains the relationships she has built over time, nonetheless, give her the ability to be flexible and reach across the aisle.
